Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay On The Budget Extender Passed Today

“It's been six years since New Yorkers have seen an on-time budget, and Albany’s dysfunction is wearing thin. The failure to pass a timely and transparent budget that curbs spending only validates the sentiment of New Yorkers that state government isn’t run effectively.

Late budgets have become an accepted norm. So too have budget extenders, which are necessary to avoid severe consequences such as: delayed payments to state workers and contractors, localities unable to plan effectively and legislation rammed through without proper scrutiny. This ongoing pattern undermines confidence in Albany.

It is unacceptable that on the statutory deadline, budget negotiations remain at a standstill. There must be a sense of urgency for legislators to work together, reach an agreement and deliver a budget that best serves the people of New York.”
