Assembly Passes Advanced Building Codes, Appliance and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act of 2022

Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Patricia Fahy today announced that the Assembly has passed the Advanced Building Codes, Appliance and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act of 2022, legislation to increase the state’s appliance efficiency standards, reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with buildings and align the Energy Code with the clean energy and climate policies of the state (A.10439, Fahy).

“When we passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, we took an important step in a more sustainable direction in this state,” Speaker Heastie said. “By increasing energy efficiency in our buildings and appliances, we’ll help reduce consumption, limit emissions and help make New York a greener more sustainable place.”

“The Advanced Building Codes Act will save New York utility ratepayers up to $15 billion by the year 2035 while reducing New York’s energy consumption and in turn, help meet our ambitious climate mandates,” said Assemblymember Fahy. “By simply increasing the efficiency and energy standards of appliances and equipment, and adding the state’s climate mandates set forth under the CLCPA into New York’s state energy conservation construction code, we’re continuing to tackle one of the largest sources of our carbon emissions: building stock. Passing this legislation means we’re saving New Yorkers money while improving our overall energy efficiency and putting us on a path to meet our climate mandates. The Advanced Building Codes, Appliance and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act of 2022 will help New York meet the goals set in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act by updating the Energy code to facilitate improved energy and water efficiency standards for appliances. Buildings are the single largest user of energy in New York State, accounting for 60 percent of all energy consumed. In addition to reducing energy consumption, the standards in this legislation will save a projected $15 billion on utilities by 2035.
