Speaker Heastie Continues Statewide Tour on Long Island, Visits Stony Brook Cancer Center

Speaker Heastie continued his statewide tour today on Long Island with Assemblymember Steve Englebright. The two toured the Stony Brook University Cancer Center (SBCC), which was awarded a $1 million state grant, and met with members of the Gordon Heights community.
“As a Stony Brook alum, I am so proud to be able to come back today with Assemblymember Englebright and see the incredible clinical care and research the cancer center is doing,” Speaker Heastie said. “I hope this state funding will help them become a National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center, so they can continue their great work to save lives today and long into the future.”
“SBCC provides people here in Suffolk County and across Long Island with critical cancer care, and I believe that they are a great candidate for National Cancer Institute designation,” Assemblymember Englebright said. “Touring the cancer center was a great opportunity to see how the funding we’ve secured is being used to help cure cancer and contribute to lifesaving research.”
Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Englebright together toured SBCC, which was awarded a $1 million grant in the State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2022-23 Budget. This funding is part of $3.7 million in state grant funding over the last five years. SBCC is currently applying to become and National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Cancer Center, which would enable Stony Brook Medicine to hire additional researchers and clinical investigators. SBCC, in addition to research, offers clinical care and has more than 100 clinical trials available.
Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Englebright also met with members of the community in Gordon Heights, a historically Black community in Suffolk County.
