Agency Mission

The Department of Law provides legal counsel to the State and represents the State in court proceedings. It protects State agencies and citizens through the investigation and prosecution of organized crime and Medicaid fraud. The Department also brings civil and/or criminal actions against violators of environmental law.

Year-to-Year Change

The Executive adds $6,752,200 or 6 percent to General Fund State Operations. In addition, The Executive proposes an All Funds increase of $9,043,200 or 5.44 percent.

Legislative Changes

The Assembly recommends the addition of $2,000,000 for the provision of additional services. The Assembly provides a sub-allocation of $500,000 from the Department of Insurance to the Department of Law for the Managed Care Assistance Program.

The Assembly provides $500,000 for services and expenses of a special Automobile Insurance Fraud Prosecutor to be appointed by the Governor and Attorney General. Funding for this program will be a sub-allocated from the Department of Insurance to the Department of Law.

The Assembly supports Article VII legislation which authorizes the Department of Law to recover collection expenses from debtors who owe debts to the State. The Assembly modifies the Executive proposal, including language to provide protection for debtors owing smaller amounts.
