    AmeriCorps* VISTA Program

The Corporation for National and Community Service

The Corporation for National and Community Service invites applications for new AmeriCorps* VISTA projects in New York State. The purpose of the program is to mobilize more Americans to help alleviate and eliminate poverty in our country.

AmeriCorps* VISTA provides full-time, full-year members to eligible local organizations. Each project must focus on the mobilization of community resources, the transference of skills to community residents, and the expansion of the capacity of community-based and grassroots organizations to solve local problems.

Programming should encourage permanent, long-term solutions to problems confronting low-income communities, rather than short-term approaches for handling emergency needs. Programming should fall within one of the following areas: Children and Youth; Welfare to Work; Financial Asset Development; or Seniors in Poverty.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be public or non-profit organizations. They must have resources available to support AmeriCorps* VISTA members in the performance of their tasks; be able to mobilize community, public, and private resources; and have the capacity to build community partnerships and collaborative efforts in order to achieve project self-sufficiency. Projects should be designed to utilize at least five full-time VISTA members.
FUNDING: In most cases, the Corporation covers the costs of childcare, health insurance and a living allowance for each VISTA member.
DEADLINE: Applications should be received by one of the following deadlines to qualify for quarterly review: January 4, 2002; April 1, 2002 and July 1, 2002.
