Job Training for Displaced Health Care Workers

The Displaced Healthcare Workers Program will allow employees affected by the recommendations of the Berger Commission or other economic factors or trends to receive the necessary job placement, counseling and short-term training necessary to be rehired into the health care system or into other comparable jobs. The program is targeted at workers in less-skilled positions, such as service, clerical, maintenance and security jobs. Unlike their co-workers who are in short supply for posts such as clinical, technical and other patient care areas, these employees are expected to have less access to reemployment opportunities without additional assistance and short-term training.
ELIGIBILITY:  Organizations eligible to apply must be not-for-profit entities, including union training funds, health care facility trade associations, area health education centers, health worker unions, and labor management committees. Grant seekers must have experience in developing and maintaining a jobs data bank and experience in coordinating job counseling, placement, and short term training services for health care workers.
FUNDING:  Up to $15 million in total funding.

Summer Training for Teachers in Engineers of the Future Programs

The State Education Department is providing funding for grants for the costs of providing college or university-based summer training for teachers necessary to implement rigorous pre-engineering curricula in the middle and high school levels.
ELIGIBILITY:  Colleges and universities in New York State. The applicant college or university must partner with public school district(s), charter schools(s) and/or nonpublic schools and serve teachers in schools that are currently or will be implementing a rigorous pre-engineering program at the middle and/high school level.
FUNDING:  Total funding is $5 million.
DEADLINE:  Applications must be postmarked by January 24, 2007.

Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund

New York State Education Department

The New York State Education Department, State Archives, has announced the availability of grants from the Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund to improve records management and archival administration in New York State’s local governments. Grants are available for inventory and planning, active records, inactive records, historical records, and educational uses of local government records projects.
ELIGIBILITY:  Local governments, including but not limited to boards of cooperative educational services, cities, counties, fire districts, school districts, towns and villages. On average, between 500 and 700 local governments apply each year, and competition is typically quite rigorous.
FUNDING:  Individual Projects (a single local government) may request up to $75,000; Cooperative Projects (two or more local governments acting together) may request up to $125,000; Complex Projects (one local government addressing problems involving an exceptionally large quantity of records or a complicated records management problem) must request at least $75,001 but no more than $125,000. County clerks and the New York City Register may apply for one additional grant of up to $75,000 under the County Land Records Initiative, a subcategory of Active Records.

Women’s Sports Foundation

These awards are designed to get girls to increase exercise and physical activity by inspiring teams to help fight the physical and psychological health risks affecting America’s inactive youth. Teams must lead their own team project that will get girls in their communities physically active and submit a detailed essay or a VHS, DVD or CD-ROM telling about the projects.
ELIGIBILITY:  School, amateur, community and/or nonprofit affiliated teams whose members are female, enrolled in 9th - 12th grade and U.S. residents.
FUNDING:  Maximum award is $2,500.

Education and Job Training Fund for Survivors of Domestic Violence

The Allstate Foundation

Allstate has partnered with the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) Fund to establish the Education and Job Training Assistance Fund. The fund channels small grants to survivors of domestic violence in order to achieve their educational and job-related goals. The fund is intended to help survivors achieve greater independence over their financial lives as well as establish options for themselves in the future. The fund supports career-advancement activities such as professional licenses, workforce tools, and additional job training. Examples include licensing fees; books and supplies for school; job skills training; tuition; requirements for jobs; registration fees; temporary child care so that the applicant can attend school, take a class, or look for employment; public transportation; and rental fees for computer time at a computer center.
ELIGIBILITY:  Any survivor of domestic violence is eligible to apply, although the fund requests that the application be completed by a local domestic violence program or a domestic violence coalition. Domestic violence coalitions and local programs must contact the NNEDV Fund to request an Education and Job Training Fund application form.
FUNDING:  $75,000 has been committed to the fund and there are plans for additional funding in the future. Survivors can receive up to $1,000 for specific educational and training needs.

Travel and Study Grant Program for New York City Artists

Jerome Foundation

The Jerome Foundation makes grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists living in the five boroughs of New York City. Funds support periods of travel for the purpose of study, exploration and growth. The program supports such activities as research leading to the creation of new work, the development of collaborations, participation in specific training programs, time for reflection and individualized study, investigating artistic work outside New York City, and dialogue on aesthetic issues.
ELIGIBILITY:  Emerging artists who create new work: music - composers and sound artists; theater - playwrights and creators of performance art and experimental theater; and visual artists.
FUNDING:  Grants of up to $1,500 each will be awarded for short-term travel of three to six days. Grants of up to $5,000 each will be awarded for trips of one week or longer. Travel may be national or international.

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Binghamton, January 22-26, 2007, hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County; Buffalo, March 26-30, 2007, hosted by American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter; New York City, April 16-20, 2007, hosted by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and East Farmingdale, June 4-8, 2007, hosted by Molloy College.

The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $825, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000.
