New York Great Lakes Protection Fund Large Grant Program

Department of Environmental Conservation

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is issuing a request for applications for state assistance funding to conduct innovative projects that help to protect, conserve, restore, and enhance the Great Lakes resources in New York State. Preferred projects should bring together experts from diverse disciplines to conduct research, data collection and analysis, and public communication that informs or enhances current New York State management issues and processes. Projects should especially focus on the exchange of knowledge in the areas of toxic discharge control and elimination, contaminant remediation, and sustaining and enhancing the health of the basin’s floral, fauna and human elements of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Projects already receiving funds from other available New York State assistance programs for similar activities are ineligible for funding under this program. Project funding priorities are established by the Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council.

ELIGIBILITY:  Municipalities, academic research institutions and not-for-profit corporations.

FUNDING:  A total of $500,000 is currently available. The minimum grant amount will be $15,000 and the maximum will be $100,000.

Family Support Services

Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and the Long Island Developmental Disabilities Service Office

Grants will be available to provide in-home respite services, out-of-home respite services, recreation services, non-medicaid case management/service coordination, family reimbursement and innovative services to families that provide care in their home for a family member three years of age or older with a disability. The goal of the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Family Support Service Program is to assist families to remain intact for as long as they desire. An additional priority also is to address the needs of those who remain unserved and underserved. Twenty-five percent of total funds received must be used to provide access to families by creating new programs or enhancing existing programs for individuals with challenging behaviors or in need of crisis intervention.

ELIGIBILITY:  Not-for-profit agencies providing services to the mentally retarded and/or developmentally disabled.

FUNDING:  A total of $1,241,000 is available.

Curriculum, Instruction and Instructional Technology

Education Department

Grant funding will be made available for grants to public and independent colleges and universities in New York State through the Education Department. These funds are intended to support the costs of advanced summer mathematics and science programs. Such programs will be offered to high-performing mathematics and science students who will have completed grade seven in June 2008. These programs must provide advanced coursework in mathematics and science as well as be aligned to the New York State learning standards. The programs must take place between July 1, 2008 and August 31, 2008. Additionally the programs must be at no cost to the students. ELIGIBILITY:  All public and independent colleges and universities in New York State.

FUNDING:  A total of $5 million is available for grants. Individual grants will be allocated depending on need.

Flood Mitigation Assistance Program

State Emergency Management Office

The State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) Mitigation Section is requesting a detailed project application for Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program 2008. Funds will be used to support eligible mitigation measures that benefit properties insured under the FEMA National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and include acquiring NFIP insured properties and demolishing or relocating structures; elevating NFIP insured structures; dry flood proofing of non-residential NFIP insured structures; beach nourishment activities, and minor localized flood control projects that protect/benefit NFIP insured structures. Please note: Sub-applicants eligible for project grants include those that have a FEMA-approved and locally adopted FMA (flood mitigation) plan or local “multi-hazard” mitigation plan in place by March 31, 2008. Once applications are received, SEMO will review applications, recommend necessary revisions and additions, and convene an impartial review board to rate and rank the applications.

ELIGIBILITY:  State-level agencies, federally-recognized Indian tribal governments, as well as local governments to include counties, towns, villages and cities, and state-recognized Indian tribes. Private colleges and universities and non-profit organizations are not eligible sub-applicants; however, eligible sub-applicants such as local governments may apply for assistance on their behalf.

Community-Based Breast Cancer Education, Counseling, Outreach and Support Services

Department of Health

Grants will be awarded to community-based organizations that are not part of or affiliated with a statewide, national or international organization or a major medical or academic institution. These organizations will be expected to provide a broad range of services to individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. These services will include, but not be limited to, education, counseling, outreach and support. The provision of such services can improve the ability of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer to cope and deal with the uncertainties, challenges and life complications that accompany the disease. The overall goal of this program will be to the reduce stress experienced by individuals diagnosed with breast cancer.

ELIGIBILITY:  Grassroots, freestanding, not-for-profit organizations utilizing a large number of volunteers that offer a broad range of services such as counseling, education, outreach and support for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer in New York State.

FUNDING:  Current plans are to issue approximately 10 awards. Each of these contracts will fund up to $40,000 for the first year of the contract and $20,000 per year for each of the subsequent four years of the contract.

Grantsmanship Center

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Newburgh, March 24-28, 2008, hosted by Orange County. Another Grantsmanship Training Program will be offered in: Buffalo, April 7-11, hosted by the Salvation Army.

The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $875, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000.

Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

Proposal Writing Basics and Workshops:

Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their non-profit organizations.

Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online:

This session provides a hands-on introduction to the Center’s comprehensive Web subscription database.

How to Approach a Foundation:

Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential funders; plan calls and meetings; and build partnerships with donors. This class is intended for fundraisers with some experience, though not necessarily with foundations.
