Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial 2009 Eco-docks
Department of State
The Department of State is soliciting applications from local governments for matching grants available under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) for Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial 2009 Eco-docks projects. Projects will be expected to develop new public docks and/or improve existing public docks for recreational non-motorized boats on the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. Application materials are available online at: www.dos.state.ny.us.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants include any Hudson River or Lake Champlain municipality.
FUNDING: Grants will be available for up to 75% of the total eligible project costs set forth in the application and as approved by the Department.

Spinal Cord Injury Research Board

The New York State Department of Health and the Spinal Cord Injury Research Board (SCIRB) invites eligible applicants to submit proposals to accelerate the pace with which basic findings are translated into clinical practice for the benefit of spinal cord injured (SCI) persons. Specifically, the successful Center of Research Excellence application will focus on a set of important and well-defined problems that promise transition to clinical trials within a decade. Applicant organizations should demonstrate strong leadership and a basic infrastructure that includes a Director, Co-Director and administrative staff, at least one integrated core facility or core service to support the meritorious projects and a commitment and a means to ensure that any core facilities/services be made available to other SCIRB-funded contractors. Applying organizations should also have investigators or groups of investigators from one or more institutions. The investigators should have diverse experiences and interests in basic, applied, translational and clinical studies and broad-based training programs designed to foster standardized approaches to SCI research and emphasize cross-training that spans clinical outcomes to basic science models. Although the SCIRB has not formally developed a list of research priorities, projects targeting tissue regeneration, repair or restoration of function through biomedical and bioengineering research are of strongest interest, as are the under-studied areas of bowel and bladder function. Projects including the use of pluripotent stem cells are also welcome.
ELIGIBILITY: New York State not-for-profit organizations or governmental organizations, academic institutions, research organizations, medical centers; or entities with demonstrated capability to conduct externally-funded research and effectively administer and support a complex center of research excellence award.
FUNDING: Approximately $7.2 million is available to support this award. The amount of funds will be contingent upon the quality of applications submitted.

Department of Labor
The U.S. Department of Labor announces the availability of funds authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the Recovery Act) for projects that provide training and placement services to provide pathways out of poverty and into employment. These funds are being distributed by the federal government to preserve and create jobs, promote the nation’s economic recovery, and assist those most impacted by the recession. National and local applicants are expected to implement project activities at the community level.
ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations that deliver services through networks of local affiliates, coalition members, and other established partners such as a network of affiliated community or faith-based organizations; and their local affiliates, coalition members, or other established partners that have the ability to provide services in four or more states.
FUNDING: Estimated total program funding: $150 million; individual awards of $2 million to $8 million.

CVS Caremark
The CVS Caremark Community Grants program awards funds to organizations for programs targeting children with disabilities; programs focusing on health and rehabilitation services; and public schools promoting a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs, and initiatives that give greater access to physical movement and play. Additionally, some contributions are made to organizations that provide uninsured individuals with needed care, in particular programs where the care received is of higher quality and delivered by providers who participate in accountable community health care programs.
ELIGIBILITY: Nonprofit organizations.
FUNDING: Individual grants of up to $5,000.
DEADLINE: The grant application process runs through October 31.

Environmental Protection and Conservation Grant
The Fields Pond Foundation
The Fields Pond Foundation’s primary mission is to provide financial assistance to nature and land conservation organizations that are community-based and that serve to increase environmental awareness by involving local residents in conservation issues. Applicants should focus projects on trailmaking and other enhancement of public access to conservation lands, rivers, coastlines and land acquisition for conservation. The Fields Pond Foundation also provides funding for establishing endowments as a means of funding stewardship of conservation areas and related education programs and publications. The Foundation is looking for grantmaking opportunities where a modest investment of grant funds can help in a significant way to improve public access to and enjoyment of natural areas, while maintaining the health and integrity of the environment. Projects in which volunteerism is a significant component are more likely to be funded.

FUNDING: The expected range of grants is $500 to $25,000, with most falling within the range of $2,000 to $10,000.
DEADLINE: Proposals and concept papers may be submitted at any time, since the Directors meet regularly throughout the year.

though not necessarily with foundations.

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Buffalo, September 21-25, 2009, hosted by the Salvation Army.
The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $895, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000.
