On the state level...

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is providing financial assistance through Technical Assistance Grants (TAGs). TAGs are citizen participation tools that community groups can use to increase public awareness and understanding of remedial activities taking place at State Superfund and Brownfield Cleanup program sites that pose a significant threat to public health and the environment in their community. TAGs are intended to help grant recipients understand existing environmental data developed about the site, comment on site remedial activities and proposals and share the information obtained with the public.

  • Eligibility:
    Non-profit community organizations whose members’ health, economic well-being or enjoyment of the environment may be affected by a release or threatened release of contamination at the eligible site.

  • Funding: Eligible community groups may apply to receive grants for up to $50,000 per eligible site.

  • Deadline: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting grant applications for the Household Hazardous Waste State Assistance Program. Grants will help municipalities fund household hazardous waste collection days and the construction of permanent household hazardous waste facilities.

  • Eligibility: New York State municipalities.

  • Funding: Funding is provided on a 50% reimbursement rate for eligible costs and there is a $2 million cap per project.

  • Deadline: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

On the federal level...

National Endowment for the Humanities

The National Endowment for the Humanities, through its Bridging Cultures through Film: International Topics program, will award development or production funding for analytical documentary film projects that examine international and transnational themes in the humanities and explore one or more countries and cultures outside of the United States. Development funds support filmmakers for a wide range of activities, including but not limited to: collaboration with scholars to develop humanities content, research, preliminary interviews, travel, and the creation of partnerships for outreach activities. Production funds support filmmakers in various stages of production and post-production.


National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation, through its Division of Earth Sciences (EAR), will award postdoctoral fellowships for integrated programs of independent research and education that address scientific questions within the scope of EAR disciplines. The fellowships are designed to foster leadership in the Earth Sciences community by providing research experience and education to highly qualified investigators early in their career. The program supports researchers for a period of up to 2 years with fellowships that can be taken to the institution or national facility of their choice.


On the private level...

ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research

The ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research is accepting grant applications for research on aspects of alcohol consumption and its effects. The Foundation is interested in funding grants in the following areas as they relate most directly to its mission: factors influencing transitions in drinking patterns and behavior, effects of moderate use of alcohol on health and well-being, mechanisms underlying the behavioral and biomedical effects of alcohol, and biobehavioral/interdisciplinary research on the etiology of alcohol misuse. Applications will be reviewed by the Medical Advisory Council or the Behavioral and Social Advisory Council. Grant applicants are typically notified within a month following the Advisory Council meetings, which are usually held in November and April.


American Honda Foundation

The American Honda Foundation engages in grant making that reflects the basic tenets, beliefs, and philosophies of Honda companies – imagination, creativity, youth, science, humanities, and innovation. The foundation will award funding for youth education programs in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the environment, job training, and literacy.

The Foundation Center

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in New York City during July 2011:

Grantseeking Basics: July 6, 14, 26
Attendees will learn how the center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

Proposal Writing Basics: July 7
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their non-profit organizations.

Introduction to Finding Funders: July 6, 14, 26
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online database – the Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grantmaking institutions.

How to Approach a Foundation: July 13
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are not experts.
