On the federal level...

Health Center Program, Health Resources and Services Administration

The Health Center Program seeks to improve the health in underserved populations and communities throughout the United States. The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration is currently accepting grant applications for its Health Center Program through the Service Area Competition (SAC). A SAC application is a request for Federal financial assistance to support comprehensive primary health care services for a competitively announced underserved area or population. All announced service areas are currently served by Health Center Program grantees whose project periods are ending in FY 2012.

Health centers must serve an announced service area as defined by the HRSA in order to be eligible to receive funds. All individuals in the service area must be given access to the center; for example, applicants cannot serve a single age group or a specific disease category.

Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant Program, Health Resources and Services Administration

The Outreach Program supports projects that demonstrate effective models of outreach and service delivery through collaboration, adoption of an evidence-based or promising practice model, demonstration of health outcomes, replicability and sustainability. Proposed projects will have an outcomes-oriented approach that will enhance and sustain the delivery of effective health care in rural communities by tracking specific health indicators that will demonstrate the impact of their project at the end of their grant period. They will be based on evidence-based or promising practice models in order to avoid “reinventing the wheel” and demonstrate health status improvement in rural communities. Proposed Outreach projects can take the framework of an evidence-based or promising practice model and tailor it to their community’s need and organization.

Surdna Foundation

The Surdna Foundation’s Sustainable Environments program is accepting proposals for grants focusing on the development of the green economy. The Foundation seeks to help organizations make investments in the new energy economy that create green jobs, expand the green manufacturing sector, and focus on employment for low-income Americans as a pathway out of poverty. Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Surdna Foundation asks that a letter of inquiry be submitted online as the first step in the application process.

Youth Service America/State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants

State Farm and Youth Service America are offering grants of up to $1,000 for service learning projects in U.S. K-12 schools. The program will fund semester-long projects that begin on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 16, 2012) and end on Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22, 2012). To be eligible, applicants must be a teacher, service-learning coordinator or student in a K-12 public school; or a staff member or youth in a community-based organization working with a public school. Projects must serve a community need. Up to 125 grants will be awarded.
