ASSEMBLY STANDING COMMITTEE ON
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, JOB CREATION, COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
In 2009 the nation was impacted by yet another year of economic woes. New York State was hit especially hard due to diminished tax receipts generated by Wall Street, which in previous years was responsible for nearly 20% of the State's revenue. New York residents, like others around the country, have seen their retirement funds dwindle and their standard of living reduced. The State has been forced to cut back on spending in many areas, including economic development. Although the State continues to face a substantial budget deficit, there is still a great need for a role for the State in facilitating economic growth.
The Empire Zone Program was a very successful vehicle for the business community for nearly a decade. However, the Empire Zone Program is now scheduled to sunset as of June 30, 2010. The State intends to develop a new comprehensive, efficient program for a strong business climate and future economic growth. This hearing will assist in determining the current and future needs of the business community and the steps the State must take in enhancing the viability of the business sector. The Committee seeks to work closely with the business community to ensure a successful future of economic growth.
Ten copies of any prepared testimony should be submitted at the hearing registration desk. The Committee would appreciate advance receipt of prepared statements.
In order to further publicize these hearings, please inform interested parties and organizations of the Committee's interest in hearing testimony from all sources.
In order to meet the needs of those who may have a disability, the Assembly, in accordance with its policy of non-discrimination on the basis of disability, as well as the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), has made its facilities and services available to all individuals with disabilities. For individuals with disabilities, accommodations will be provided, upon reasonable request, to afford such individuals access and admission to Assembly facilities and activities.
